If cost and convenience are principal concerns when choosing a winter travel destination, you may want to heed a new report’s findings.

Personal-finance website WalletHub compared about 70 of the largest U.S. metro areas and concluded that the New York metro area, which extends into New Jersey and Pennsylvania, is the best cold-weather destination. The Atlanta and Washington metro areas rank No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, WalletHub says.

“The top three cold destinations are easily accessible and affordable to get to by plane for most Americans,” WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzalez explains. “They also boast a large number of attractions, and the weather is great for those who like the cold. The New York, Atlanta and Washington metro areas offer plenty of activities for travelers, including music venues, food festivals, restaurants, wellness and spa centers and shopping centers.”

WalletHub analyzed each destination based on 37 metrics, primarily the expense and hassle of traveling to each location. Other metrics included weather forecasts, safety and variety of activities.

WalletHub’s report also analyzed the best warm-weather winter destinations based on the same metrics. Las Vegas was named No. 1, followed by Austin and San Diego.

“They’re fairly easy and cheap to get to by plane,” Gonzales says. “They offer a large number of attractions and activities for tourists and have great weather. They have plenty of coffee and tea shops, music venues, food festivals, restaurants, wellness and spa centers, shopping centers and ice cream and frozen yogurt shops. For those who are more active, there are many tennis courts, baseball and softball diamonds, basketball hoops, bike rental facilities and great parks.”

WalletHub’s report also found that the average flight to a popular warm-weather winter destination costs $521.74 and is five hours and 17 minutes. The average flight to a popular cold-weather winter destination costs $396.17 and is 3 1/2 hours.
