As we brace for another wet summer, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting severe summer rains, Aussies are looking to escape the downpours and head overseas.

According to early Skyscanner trends data, cities across South-East Asia are leading the list of summer break destinations, as Aussies look to spend what will be, for many, their summer break overseas for the first time in over two years.

“Australians’ travel spirit is back in full force with strong demand for international travel since borders began opening earlier this year,” Aussie travel expert Brendan Walsh said.

“The upcoming summer holiday period is no exception, with popular international destinations top of the agenda including Bali, Ho Chi Minh, Seoul and New Delhi.

“We can clearly see Aussies are making up for the time lost over the past two years when it comes to travel, and are excited to explore South-East Asia with many Aussies also appear to be taking this time as an opportunity to visit loved ones overseas, the first time many have seen each other in a number of years.”

To help Aussies plan their holidays, Skyscanner has revealed the top five trending international destinations for summer.

1. Bali, Indonesia

It’s no surprise Bali is popular for summer 2022 trips with its vibrant culture, stunning natural landscapes and an average temperature of 31˚c during the summer months.

2. New Delhi, India

New Delhi, India has been revealed as a top trending destination. With many returning home to the city to visit friends and family, others seek to visit the bucket list destination and take in its exquisite culture and cuisine.

Tips to bag the best deal this summer

“If you’re looking ahead to summer trips, now is the time to start planning,” Walsh says, sharing some of his tips below.

  • Be flexible. Searching by multiple dates and airports will give you the best chance of a bargain. Flight prices are all based on supply and demand, and because some dates are more popular than others, prices will vary. Consider travelling a day before or a day after your original departure dates, flying on less popular days of the week is always cheaper.
  • Mix and match. Mixing and matching the airlines and airports you choose to fly with and from can seriously cut costs. Fares don’t have to booked as returns, look at flying out with one airline and back with another, or out of one airport and back into another, as this can save you money.
  • Try a new destination. If you don’t have a fixed destination in mind for your holiday, you can search ‘Everywhere’ on Skyscanner. This is a great way to see what’s available, ordered by price, and can inspire you to go somewhere you’ve never been before.”
