Kerry’s Dark Sky Reserve has been listed in the ‘Top European Destinations for Stargazing’ during the winter solstice.
he list was compiled by travel experts at Scott Dunn in the UK, who selected the best locations in Europe for an ‘unforgettable astral adventure’ this winter.
The Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve is a well-established, internationally recognised Gold Tier Dark Sky Reserve – the only one of its kind in the Northern Hemisphere – that attracts thousands of visitors each year, including amateur astronomers and cosmic enthusiasts.
Kerry is listed among stargazing sites in Reykjavik in Iceland, La Palma in Spain, Brandenburg in Germany, and Northumberland in the UK.
The rise of astro tourism continues to attract travellers to Kerry’s Dark Sky Reserve, which covers areas in Kells, Caherciveen, Portmagee, Valentia Island, The Glen, Ballinskelligs, Waterville, Dromid, Derrynane and Caherdaniel.
The Kerry Reserve is described on the list as ‘one of only three’ Gold Tier Reserves in the world – the highest tier that can be awarded by the International Dark-Sky Association.
It also lists Kerry Airport as the ‘best place for visitors to fly into’ with car hire facilities easily accessible.
The Kerry Dark Sky Reserve is considered one of the best places in the world due to its pristine dark skies and lack of light pollution.
