Flights to Greece and Turkey are leading the way as departures from UK airports approach the highest level since before the coronavirus pandemic. Aviation analytics firm Cirium has revealed that flights from this country during June are expected to reach numbers not seen since October 2019.
There are scheduled to be 83,136 departures from UK airports this June – the highest number since October 2019 when there were 94,893. Flights this June are up 241 per cent on June 2021, and up 823 per cent on June 2020. Compared to June 2019, they are down only 16.4 per cent
The data shows Turkey and Greece are performing the best – with flights from the UK exceeding June 2019 levels by 34.5 per cent and 24.2 per cent respectively. Meanwhile, Cirium has revealed that flights to Spain this summer will reach 93 per cent of 2019 levels.
Between June and August 2022, there are scheduled to be 261,411 inbound flights to Spanish airports – equating to around 44,832,000 seats. Between June and August 2019, 279,597 services to the favourite holiday destination of UK sunseekers – equating to around 46,993,000 seats.
This summer (June to August), Ryanair is scheduled to be the largest carrier to Spain, followed by Vueling and Iberia. Out of Spain’s 15 busiest airports, Madrid is the slowest to recover, with 18.09 per cent fewer flights this summer than during the same period in 2019.
Lanzarote has recovered the most, with 13.01 per cent more flights this summer than during the same period in 2019. Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca are also set to welcome more aircraft this summer. Passengers arriving at Palma airport from the UK have experienced lengthy queues, which have been blamed on the extra passport checks required since Brexit.
