Four of the top five best-value holiday destinations popular with tourists from Britain can be flown to from Newcastle International Airport.

Marmaris in Turkey, Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach, the Algarve in Portugal and Paphos, Cyprus all made it into the top five best value destinations according to the Post Office Holiday Money Report.

The report surveys 36 popular holiday destinations worldwide, comparing prices for meals, drinks and other essentials. The eight items surveyed – a three-course evening meal for two with wine, bottle of beer, glass of wine, can of Coca-Cola, large bottle of still water, cup of coffee, suncream and insect repellent – were chosen as “representative of the purchases British tourists are likely to make,” the Post Office says.

There are direct flights through Ryanair, Jet2 and TUI from Newcastle International to eight of the top 10 best-value destinations, including Spain’s Costa del Sol (Malaga Airport), Funchal in Madeira, and Orlando, in Florida, USA.

Marmaris, in Turkey, was named the best value destination, with a total cost of £26.13 for the eight items, and was the cheapest for a three-course meal. There are direct flights from Newcastle to Marmaris’s airport, Dalaman, with Jet2, TUI and Corendon.

Sunny Beach in Bulgaria came second in the list of best value destinations, at £26.19 for the eight items, including the cheapest beer . You can go there from Newcastle by flying to Bourgas, with TUI, Jet2 or Balklan Holidays.

Nick Boden, Head of Post Office Travel Money said: “It will pay dividends to invest time in holiday homework because many people won’t have travelled abroad in the past two years. They need to be aware that prices have risen sharply in some destinations and fallen significantly in others. We advise making a destination shortlist and comparing costs before booking a trip.”

The Algarve region in Portugal, which you can get to from Newcastle by flying to Faro, is the best value destination in the Eurozone. Jet2, Ryanair and TUI all offer direct flights between Newcastle and Faro. Elsewhere in Portugal, Madeira makes the list.

The 10 best value destinations according to Post Office Holiday Money report 2022

There are direct flights from Newcastle to airports near eight of the top 10 best-value destinations. Airlines include TUI, Ryanair, Jet2 and Corenden. Of the top 10, only Cape Town and Mombasa will always require connecting flights via airports like Heathrow, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris under current summer schedules.
