It seems like, when has Cancun not been breaking records left, right, and center? In Reportur news this week, it was announced that Cancun broke a record for most hotels opened for a travel destination, clocking in at over 200 new properties opened in the state of Quintana Roo over the past three years.
In the report, it was stated that 200 new hotels opened over a three-year period in the region is a “world record compared to other destinations with a similar population size.” According to the latest stats, the Mexican Caribbean had more than 126,000 rooms available for tourists as of October 2022, and that number was predicted to increase to 130,000 by the end of the year.
Even with more new hotels and vacation rentals opening in Cancun and the surrounding region of the Riviera Maya, accommodation options continue to be booked up quickly by travelers. We reported just last month that Cancun hotels were expected to be at 80% occupancy for the winter travel season. And despite the travel chaos over the holiday week due to terrible storms and staff shortages and just about everything in between, Cancun still ended the year with good numbers at hotels across the region, according to the report.
On top of hotels opening in record breaking numbers, that’s not accounting for all the other records that Cancun is breaking as a travel destination. The Cancun International Airport recorded its busiest day of all time, which was during the first week of December 2022. Then just the following week, Cancun became the second most popular destination in the world after breaking another record for international arrivals at the Cancun Airport.
So, what’s behind this big appeal? Here’s just some reasons why Cancun continues to be the favorite destination for travelers.

Why Travelers Can’t Get Enough Of Cancun
Ah, Cancun. Where the weather is warm and balmy year-round, it’s easy to travel around, there’s great food and drinks, excursions aplenty, and you can lounge the day area by a swim up pool with some of the best beach views in the world.
Another plus is that Cancun is much more affordable compared to remote Caribbean islands like St.Barts or the British Virgin Islands. Basically, visiting Cancun gives you access to world-class beaches without the giant price tag.
And the experiences and outdoor excursions in Cancun can’t be beat (there’s no other place in the world where you can swim in a cenote…that we know of!) You can pick your poison, whether you’re looking for a fiesta-fueled getaway or a luxurious, boutique stay in an all-inclusive. Cancun is a travel destination that attracts the luxury travelers, the vagabonds, and everyone in between.
In the practical sense, Cancun is also an easy getaway for U.S. and Canadian travelers. From many cities in North America, Cancun is the cheapest and easiest way to paradise. There’s never been more direct flights to Cancun than in 2022, and airlines have definitely noticed the demand and giving travelers what they want.
