There are a lot of choices for warm destinations that Americans can travel to so that they can get away during the winter months, but some of the most visited places are in Mexico. Los Cabos, and San Jose del Cabo in particular, remain one of Americans’ top December destinations for the 3rd year in a row, holding on to the second place spot after Cancun. This is according to data compiled by Allianz Partners that reviewed roundtrip customer itineraries for dates between December 17 and December 30.
During this timeframe 11 percent of Americans that are planning to travel for the holiday season plan to travel to an international destination. While the first place position is held by the very popular Mexican Caribbean destination of Cancun, San Jose del Cabo is the second most popular choice among Americans, and the region that makes up Los Cabos continues to grow in popularity. In fact, Los Cabos has hosted millions of tourists already this year, including around 30,000 just during the Thanksgiving holiday.
By the end of 2022, tourism officials are expecting that an astonishing 7 million tourists will have visited Los Cabos this year. This is a more than 20 percent increase in visitors compared to the number of tourists who visited Los Cabos in 2019, prior to the Covid pandemic. Los Cabos is the general name used to describe the region made up of the two popular destinations of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

Each of these destinations is pretty different from the other, despite the fact that they are only about 20 miles apart. Cabo San Lucas is more of a party destination, with an active nightlife, a large offering of open bar sunset cruises, and a vibrant marina often filled with people. San Jose del Cabo, on the other hand, is a quieter, more authentically Mexican city, with a charming old town and city center. We’ll share a few reasons to visit the area in general.
Breathtaking Scenery
The scenery in Los Cabos, with the backdrop of a desert landscape against the sea, is absolutely stunning. It doesn’t matter where you go in the area, you will be in awe over what you see, but a must when visiting the area is Land’s End in Cabo San Lucas. Here you can see the famous arch but even more amazing is getting a chance to see where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez.
Beautiful Weather
During the winter months, the temperature averages around a nearly perfect 68 degrees but can often get as high as 80. The milder temperatures are perfect for those looking to get away from the cold during the winter. The weather is also perfect for enjoying some outdoor activities like hiking, bike riding, or even taking a camel or horse ride on the beach.
Exciting Activities
In addition to the outdoor activities mentioned above, there are plenty of other exciting activities to enjoy, including many water activities. Since the water temperature still remains at around 72 degrees or more during the winter you can still enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, jet skiing, and the many other water adventures available. The winter months are also the time to go whale watching, as magnificent gray and humpback whales migrate to the region in December and stick around until about April.
Rest and Relaxation
Finally, the biggest reason to visit Los Cabos during the winter months is to take a break from all the stress of the holiday season and treat yourself to some rest and relaxation. There are numerous all-inclusive resorts where you can leave all the work to them and take a much-needed break that only Los Cabos can give you.
