If you’re a fan of spooky season, this is the trip for you. Clocking in at just over four hours long, this eerie excursion leads to some of the best Halloween destinations in Texas, from a haunted bar to an abandoned hospital. Visit Google Maps for a customizable trip itinerary.

1. Yorktown Memorial Hospital (Yorktown)

Located about 80 miles southeast of San Antonio, this abandoned hospital saw nearly 200 deaths during its time in operation.

The building was decommissioned in 1992, and it has been left to rot in the elements ever since. Today, those who are brave enough can embark on a daytime ghost tour – or even an overnight paranormal investigation – to see what entities lurk within the walls of this sorrowful place.

2. Palace of the Golden Orbs (Houston)

3695 Overture Dr, Houston, TX 77082, USA

Another abandoned place in Texas that’s sure to send a chill down your spine is the Palace of the Golden Orbs. Also known as Chong Hua Sheng Mu Holy Palace, this five-story, 40,000-square-foot temple is impossible to miss when you’re driving through west Houston. The Taoist palace was abandoned in 2001 after its creator was deported, and it has sat untouched ever since then.

3. La Carafe (Houston)

La Carafe is the oldest commercial building in Houston, dating back over 120 years. Located on Congress Street in the heart of the First Ward, this cozy watering hole has more spirits than those offered at the bar.

The notoriously haunted La Carafe is popular among ghost hunters – and those looking for a truly one-of-a-kind bar experience.

Between the candlelit interior, antique décor (including a vintage cash register!), and old photographs on the walls, stepping inside this historic building is like going back in time.

4. Patterson Road (Houston)

Patterson Road, Patterson Rd, Houston, TX 77084, USA

Roll up your windows and lock your doors – it’s time to drive down one of the most haunted streets in Texas: Patterson Road. Allegedly, the road was a battleground during the Civil War, and the restless spirits of those who died here are said to haunt the area. Visitors have reported everything from seeing apparitions on the side of the road to even hearing knuckles rapping against their car windows.

5. Purgatory Scream Park “Kingwood Asylum” (Kingwood)

Purgatory Scream Park “Kingwood Asylum”, 1965a Northpark Dr, Kingwood, TX 77339, USA

Last – but certainly not least – it’s time to scare yourself silly at Purgatory Scream Park “Kingwood Asylum,” Houston’s top-rated haunted attraction. This 27,000-square-foot haunted house is full of thrills and chills, with different themes each year so you never quite know what to expect.
