To help travelers make the most of their time, TripAdvisor has released its 2022 Fall Travel Index to pinpoint the season’s most popular destinations.

According to the online travel company, domestic trips are still the most attractive option to most people. This year’s Fall Travel Index found that four-fifths (81%) of Americans and nearly two-thirds (60%) of global travelers surveyed will travel domestically this fall.
With that in mind, here are the top domestic travel destinations for this fall:
As the presence of two Hawaiian cities indicates, long-haul vacations are officially making a comeback. TripAdvisor found that over 40% of Americans will travel more than 7 hours this fall, and almost half (49%) plan to travel by plane. By contrast, the 2021 Travel Index found that 68% of US travelers preferred to stay closer to home, opting for vacation destinations that were accessible by car or train.
But what about travelers who crave international excursions? It seems like many of them are eager to be beachside. The ever-popular Mexican resort Cancun was the top international destination among Americans traveling this fall. Meanwhile, the Caribbean’s Turks & Caicos experienced the largest yearly increase in TripAdvisor searches.
If you felt like everyone you know was suddenly in Italy this summer, you’re definitely onto something. The country remains a top trending vacation spot for Americans heading into autumn, with Italian cities like Como and Monterosso al Mare also ranking highly.
