Cancun has been revealed to as one of the top trending destinations in the world for 2023, according to a recent study. The extremely in-demand city has been smashing its pre-existing travel records consistently throughout the current year, setting records for bookings, arrivals, and traveler numbers as it further cemented its status as one of the world’s best-loved spots for a vacation. Now, as this study proves, it’s looking as though next year will be bringing about more of the same.
While it didn’t quite secure the top spot in the study, Cancun and the travel industry within it will be thrilled to see that the city is building on its strong pandemic-era performances and that its efforts to improve the traveler experience throughout the region aren’t going unnoticed. Here’s everything you need to know about this story, including a look at the reasons behind Cancun’s enduring success and which destinations around the world pipped it to the top spots in the study.
Cancun’s Popularity To Continue Into New Year
While it’s not exactly a surprise to anyone that Cancun is so popular right now, with new flight routes added frequently and hotels all but sold out in the region, the longevity of the city’s popularity certainly is impressive. Not only did high season start much earlier than traditionally expected, it now looks as though the city’s popularity is set to continue way into the new year, with a recent study showing that Cancun is currently one of the most in-demand destinations on the planet.
According to a recent study by the travel management company TripActions, Cancun is the fifth most searched destination in the world, behind only Orlando, Las Vegas, New York, and London, for trips during any season in 2023. The study analyzed the total number of hotel and flight searches that had a booking start date in 2023 and a booking window of July 1, 2022, to October 31, 2022, to generate their list of the most in-demand destinations for the entire year of 2023, and Cancun solidified its place in the top five for the second year running.

Why Cancun?
There is a range of factors behind Cancun’s popularity. For starters, as anyone who has visited will attest, it’s a gorgeous destination; cerulean seas and stunning beaches fronting a range of popular and well-loved resorts, delectable dining options, affordable tours, and activities to suit all kinds of travelers, and amazing Mayan ruins are just a few of the reasons why travelers keep coming back to Cancun, but there is also a range of other factors contributing to its popularity as well.
Cancun has worked hard to improve its image and appear more attractive to international travelers – despite the fact that it was wildly popular in the first place. On top of forming a committee to ensure beaches were in tip-top condition, Cancun has also welcomed a range of new hotel developments that’ll entice more travelers and worked hard to address the crime situation in the city – and looks set to reap the rewards for its pro-active self-improvement next year.
With significant projects in the region set to come to completion next year – including new and exciting hotels, the ambitious Maya train project, and an airport in nearby Tulum – Cancun’s popularity shows now signs of slowing down any time soon and could well have the eyes on becoming to world’s top travel destination in the near future.
