A travel bubble arrangement between Thailand and India has received the backing of PM Prayut Chan-o-cha, as officials look to revive foreign tourism in the kingdom. The Bangkok Post reports that government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana says the travel pact between the 2 countries has also been endorsed by Thailand’s public and private sectors.
In the pre-Covid days, Thailand welcomed nearly 2 million Indian tourists a year, which generated revenue of around 86 billion baht. Thanakorn says that as international travel restrictions ease, it’s vital to revive the Indian tourism market.
“The government expects the scheme to promote tourism by sales endorsement, travel privileges, and organising activities both in Thailand and India. The scheme will assure tourists that Thailand is ready to welcome international travellers.”
According to the report, there has not yet been any clarity on how many Indian tourists the government hopes to attract via the travel bubble arrangement.
