The CDC removed every country from its Level 4 ‘ Do Not Travel’ list on Monday—including various popular nations for U.S. tourists. The CDC’s ‘Do Not Travel’ list once included over 100 nations due to COVID-19 case numbers are the risk posed to American tourists.

However, the CDC will now reserve the highest level for “special circumstances.”

Here are some of the most popular destinations the CDC removed from its ‘Do Not Travel’ list:

1. The United Kingdom

The CDC has placed the United Kingdom—due to its large number of COVID-19 cases—on its Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ list for most of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, it’s now the perfect destination for U.S. tourists after it scrapped all internal restrictions in February and removed all COVID-19 entry requirements in March. Americans can now visit London without even thinking about COVID-19 rules and regulations.

2. France

The CDC placed France on its Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ list in 2021 due to skyrocketing COVID-19 cases. However, France has witnessed case numbers drop since January’s Omicron wave, with a current 7-day case average of 115,026. Although many EU nations have scrapped all COVID-19 entry requirements—France isn’t one of them.

The nation still requires unvaccinated travelers to take a negative PCR test within 72 hours or an antigen test within 48 hours of departure. France still requires face masks on public transport and its Pass Sanitaire (health pass) to enter some spaces, such as hospitals and retirement homes.

3. Thailand

Although Thailand had low COVID-19 cases for most of the pandemic, cases skyrocketed in 2021; in turn, the CDC added Thailand to its Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ list. Thailand is currently contemplating whether to ease all COVID-19 entry requirements.

The nation, which earned its reputation as one of the strictest destinations in Asia, may now ditch its Test & Go system on May 1. Thailand is struggling to bring back tourists due to its strict testing requirements when many Western nations have completely dropped COVID-19 rules.

4. Spain

Like the majority of Europe, the CDC placed Spain on its Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ list in 2021. However, it’s now an excellent destination for American tourists—although there are still some COVID-19 restrictions.

Spain requires all travelers to show proof of vaccination upon arrival or a COVID-19 recovery certificate from the last 6 months. In addition, Spain still requires face masks in enclosed public spaces and a social distance of 1.5 meters.

5. Costa Rica

Costa Rica was a gem for all American tourists throughout the COVID-19 pandemic; they rarely introduced any COVID-19 rules of entry requirements, unlike most countries. Having said that, the CDC placed them on its Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ List due to high COVID-19 cases.

However, Costa Rica is now the ultimate nearby destination for Americans. The nation recently removed all COVID-19 entry requirements and vaccine passports.

6. Brazil

Brazil witnessed some of the highest COVID-19 cases numbers throughout the pandemic, so it won’t surprise travelers to hear the CDC placed them on its Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ list in 2021. However, it still has some entry requirements for travelers.

Unvaccinated tourists need to show evidence of a negative COVID-19 antigen or PCR test taken no more than 24 hours before departure. Vaccinated tourists, however, can skip this requirement if they show proof of vaccination.

The Current CDC Travel Advisories

Although the CDC has ended its Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ list, three lists will remain:

  • Level 3 ‘COVID-19 High’
  • Level 2 ‘COVID-19 Moderate’
  • Level 1 ‘COVID-19 Low’

Currently, most destinations—including Europe and Caribbean nations—are on the Level 3 ‘COVID-19 High’ list. The CDC will determine these lists based on the recorded cases in the previous 28 days.

The CDC said they use “Travel Health Notices to alert travelers and other audiences to health threats around the world and advise on how to protect themselves before, during, and after travel. With this new configuration, travelers will have a more actionable alert for when they should not travel to a certain destination (Level 4), regardless of vaccination status, until we have a clearer understanding of the COVID-19 situation at that destination.

CDC will continue to monitor COVID-19 levels, in our communities, nationally, and abroad to provide the most up-to-date guidance to keep travelers safe and healthy.”

We will update you with these lists as they change.
