The End Of Outdoor Mask Mandates
Mexico, while it’s been one of the most open countries throughout the entire pandemic, it’s also one of the last places in North America to relax masking rules.
Finally, in specific areas of Mexico—the most popular travel destination for Americans—local governments have removed the mask mandate for outdoor areas.
Therefore, travelers can finally enjoy these areas without wearing masks outside:
1. Mexico City
Wearing a face covering in Mexico City’s spring and summer warmth is not something foreign tourists look forward to, but as of April 2, 2022, the city removed its mask mandate, due to a decreasing number of COVID-19 infections.
The Secretary of Health of Mexico City, Oliva López Arellano, said: “We are going to continue at the green light for two weeks, zero points out of 40, no we have no indicator of hospitalization, nor their respective trends, it is without a doubt the best moment we have had in terms of virus spread since the pandemic began two years ago.”
However, the Mexico City authorities suggest: “The voluntary use of face masks in open spaces is considered, without crowds and with a healthy distance “
2. Cancun
Cancun is the most popular Mexican destination for U.S. travelers; however, travelers had to wear masks in outdoor areas until recently. From March 22, 2022, travelers won’t have to wear face coverings in Cancun in outdoor, open areas.
However, although the outdoor mask mandate is ending, the state could reimpose the mask mandate at any time. The Cancun State Governor, Carlos Joaquín González, said authorities will remain ‘vigilant’ regarding COVID-19 rules.
3. Coahuila
The state of Coahuila has no mandatory mask mandate in outdoor areas. On March 14, 2022, Governor Miguel Ángel Riquelme Solís announced an end to mandatory masks in open spaces due to decreasing COVID-19 cases.
The state is excellent for U.S. travelers in the South because it borders Texas. Torreon, a city of 735,000 people, is the primary city in the state.
4. Tamaulipas
The state of Tamaulipas has no mandatory mask mandate in outdoor areas. The state Health Ministry announced last week that face masks would be optional in outdoor public spaces due to a reduction in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.
The state is in the northeastern region of Mexico, and it’s perfect for U.S. travelers based in Florida. Popular attractions within the state include Las Escolleras, Laguna del Carpintero, and Playa Miramar.
5. Nayarit
The state of Nayarit has no mandatory mask mandate in outdoor areas. Popular cities within Nayarit include Nuevo Vallarta and Sayulita. Visitors love Nayarit for its gorgeous Pacific Ocean coastline, including the beaches of San Blas.
6. Nuevo Leon
The state of Nuevo Leon now has no mandatory mask mandate in outdoor areas. The state is home to the popular city of Monterrey; it’s home to the second-largest population in Mexico, with over 5 million citizens. Nuevo Leon is on the U.S. border is a quick journey for most U.S. travelers.
Mexico Entry Requirements
If you’re looking to enter Mexico, you’ll be happy to hear there are no entry requirements. Although there are still some internal COVID-19 restrictions nationwide, Mexico has no testing, proof of vaccination, and passenger locator forms for tourists.
Mexico is currently witnessing the lowest COVID-19 cases in months. The current 7-day case average is 2,188, which is a major decrease from the 7-day case average of 33,623 cases in January.
